Shivratri Special: Why Lord Shiva Never Accepts These 5 Offerings?

Check out the five things which you should never use to worship Lord Shiva:

Maha Shivratri

1. Tulsi (Basil)

While worshipping the Shivling, never put tulsi leaves on it. Always offer only Bael leaves.

Tulsi (Basil)

As per Shivpuran, an asura named Jalandhar was murdered and burned to ashes by Lord Shiva. However, he was blessed with a privilege of immortality which depended on his wife Tulsi’s virginity.

In order to defeat him, Lord Vishnu had to damage Tulsi’s virginity.

Angered over her husband’s death by Shiva’s betrayal, Tulsi expelled Lord Shiva from ever being worshiped by the holy leaves.

2. Haldi (Turmeric)

4. Kumkum (Vermilion or Saffron) Tilak

Never use a kumkum tilak or the sindoor for the Shivling, although the followers can use it for the idols of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Parvati.

This is because it is something that married women use as a symbol of their wedlock and for the longevity of their joyful married life. Therefore, it’s offering to the Shivalinga is unfortunate.

5. Ketaki flowers

Once God Vishnu and Brahma got into an argument to prove who is more powerful. Witnessing the terrifying argument between the two, other Gods asked the Lord shiva to intervene.

Ketaki flowers

Lord Shiva appeared in the form of Jyotirlinga and challenged both that the one who get the beginning and the end of this Lingam is superior.

Both Gods tried hard but failed. Lord Brahma asked the “Ketaki flower” to lie, and the flower agreed. On meeting Shiva, Lord Vishnu announced his defeat but Brahma lied along with flower Ketaki.

This angered Shiva and therefore, in his anger, he cut off Brahma’s fourth head.
