Complete List Of Items That Will Be More Expensive Post-GST??

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) which is one of biggest reform in tax structure will of India be implemented from July 1, 2017. Let us check out the immediate impact on the prices of various products.

The GST Council has classified all the goods and services in the India in five categories i.e 0 per cent, 5 per cent, 12 per cent, 18 per cent and 28 per cent.


While some of these products had higher effective tax prices before the GST and the new GST tax regime will minimize the burden on consumers, some of the items will now be taxed much costlier.


While 7% of the items come under the exempted list, 14% fall in the 5 percent tax slab, 17% in the 12% slab and 43% under 18% tax rate and only 19% of the items will come under the highest 28% tax slab in the new regime.


Here are products that will now get costlier from July 1, 2017, after implementation of GST:

Personal care


1. Shampoos

2. Deodorants

3. Sanitary napkins

4. Shaving creams

5. After shave lotions

6. Dyes

7. Sunscreens

As per reports, sanitary napkins are taxed at 12 percent under the GST.

Food items:


1. Ghee
2. Biscuits
3. Branded rice
4. Cold drinks
5. Chocolate
6. Branded flour
7. Packaged chicken
8. Ice cream
9. Butter
10. Bhujia
11. Chewing gum

Household items:


1. ACs

2. TVs

3. Refrigerators

4. Washing machine

5. Water heater

6. Vacuum cleaner

7. Weighing machine

8. Dishwasher

9. Hair clippers

10. Shavers 

11. Watches

12. Furniture

13. Leather goods

14. Handbags

15. Dry clean

16. Aluminium foil

Rates of these items have been increased from 23 to 28 percent (differ from state to state).

Sin products


1. Aerated drinks
2. Cigarettes
3. Tobacco
4. Luxury goods

Under GST, cigarettes have been put in the ‘highest tax slab’ of 28 per cent with 12% additional tax called ‘Sin Tax.’



1. Mobile Phone Bills

2. Courier services

3. Insurance premiums

4. Broadband services

5. Banking charges

a) ATM withdrawals

b) Demand drafts

c) Cash deposits

d) Cheque book issuance

e) Credit card services

These will get costlier as they will come under the 18 percent tax bracket.



1. Music concerts
2. IPL tickets
3. Train tickets
4. Business class airfare
5. Movie tickets above Rs 100
6. Five-star hotel restaurants
7. Hotel room more than Rs 5,000.

8. Bikes and autos which have an engine capacity of over 350 ccs.

Hotel room tariffs between 1,000 and 2,500 INR bracket will attract a 12 per cent tax while hotels with room rents above 7,500 INR will attract a 28 % GST rate.


Hotels that serve liquor and hotels with room tariffs between Rs 2,500 and Rs 7,500 will now come under 18 percent tax slab.
