On Friday, with the announcement of the 30 new cities as smart cities were made by the Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu at a National Workshop on Urban Transformation, the total number of smart cities has reached to 90.
Smart City Mission launched on 25 June 2015 now has 90 cities and the announcement of 30 new names was done by the Central government.

The government announced the fourth list of smart cities, adding 30 names to the prevailing 60 cities that are under transformation.
The new batch of smart cities was announced by Minister of Urban Poverty Alleviation and Urban Development and Housing M Venkaiah Naidu.
Tirupur, Tirunelveli, Thootukudi, Tiruchirappalli from Tamil Nadu make it to the Mission…!!
Capital cities selected include Bengaluru, Shimla, Amaravati, Aizawl, and Gangtok.
Addressing the event, Shri Venkaiah Naidu said that 45 cities contested for 40 available smart city mission but only 30 were chosen to ensure workable and feasible plans that match the desire of the citizens as directed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi while launching the Smart Cities Mission.
Naidu also informed that with this the total investment under the smart city plans of 90 cities has increased up to a Rs 1,91,155 crore.

Till now, four lists have been announced, including the current one. The first smart cities list included the names of 20 cities and Bhubaneswar topped it.
The second list comprised of 13 names and Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow bagged the top spot. The third list, which had the names of 27 smart cities, was topped by Amritsar.
