Know Everything About Ghogha-Dahej RO-RO Ferry Service


Gujarat government has set up a ro-ro ferry service to reduce the travel time between Saurashtra to South Gujarat.

PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the phase 1 of the  ‘roll-on, roll-off (Ro-Ro)’ between Ghogha and Dahej towns.

The ferry service will operate in the Gulf of Khambhat between peninsular Saurashtra and South Gujarat. 

It is the Narendra Modi’s third visit to his home ‘Gujarat’ this month, and we saw the disclosure of projects of Rs. 2000 crore.

The state also had its first ferry service that is Rs. 650-crore drive.

Modi’s ‘dream project’….

The previous day he ended with the powerful roadshow in the Vadodara where people queued up the roads to cheer ‘Modi…Modi’.

Assembly polls in Gujarat will be held later this year, and the dates are yet to be declared by the EC. 

Key Points Of Ghogha-Dahej RO-RO Ferry Service

1. Prime Minister Modi said that the ferry service between Ghogha and Dahej in the Gulf of Cambay was his “priceless gift to India” and even said that for South-East Asia, this was the first big project.

He said:

“THIS EVENT MAY BE FOR A FERRY BETWEEN DAHEJ AND GHOGHA, BUT IT IS KEY IMPORTANCE FOR THE WHOLE NATION.”

2. From Ghogha, PM went to Dahej in Bharuch in the newly-inaugurated ferry service. He then stopped at Vadodara, where he unveiled Infrastructure and developmental projects for nearly Rs. 1,140 crore.

Vital among these were a multi-level transport hub known as ‘Jan Mahal’ and some water supply and purification projects.

3. The 31 kilometers ferry service will cut out the travel time from approximately 8 hours to 1 and greatly benefit people working in the diamond-polishing and cutting hub of Surat. 

The on-road distance between the two towns will be cut to 30 kilometers from 310.

4.  CEO of the Gujarat Maritime Board, Ajay Bhadoo which is running Ro-Ro project, said that its first phase is meant for commuters and in the second stage, the boats will be capable of ferrying cars and will be rolled out in two months. In the last phase, it would also have the facility to carry out trucks.

5. The idea of a ferry service precedes the early 1960s. But it was started in Jan 2012, when Modi was the CM of Gujarat.

Paying attention to the needs for the better use of waterways, PM said, our new mantra is “P for P (Ports for Prosperity).”

6. PM Modi said:

“EFFORTS WERE MADE TO COUNTER GUJARAT’S GROWTH AND INDUSTRIES. SINCE THE LAST 3 YEARS WE HAVE CHANGED THAT AND WAS GIVEN IMPORTANCE TO THE DEVELOPMENT.”

7.  13,000 crore Projects has been started in Gujarat this month by the Central government. 

It includes Rs. 6,000 crore offer with United Phosphorus to acquire fertilizers and the Pay Commission benefits for around 15,000 workers of the municipal corporation plus zero interest crop loans up to 3 Lakh.
