Bangladesh Landslides: 144 Dead After Heavy Rain, Death Toll Could Rise Further…!!


BANGLADESH LANDSLIDES: At least 144 people have been killed by Heavy monsoon rain and deadly landslides in southeast Bangladesh.

Densely populated Bangladesh is damaged by storms, landslides, and floods every rainy season.

The landslides hit three hilly districts in the southeast, killing 33 in Chittagong, 103 in Rangamati and 6 in Bandarban said Reaz Ahmed, head of the disaster management department.

The death toll could rise, warn officials…!!

Authorities fear the death toll will rise further as rescuers search for carcasses and many people are still missing.

Heavy rains paralyzed the Dhaka-Narayanganj-Demra dam areas..

“Rescue operations are being hampered by bad weather while authorities are still struggling to reach some remote areas,” Ahmed said.

Bangladesh landslides-5A spokesperson for the control room of the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry in Dhaka said that the dead include four soldiers who had joined the rescue operation.

Rangamati Hill district was the worst affected areas…!!

With at least 20 landslides, massive landslides resulted in 105 deaths in the remote hill district of Rangamati when mudslides buried their homes.

It includes four army personnel involved in rescue operations.

Majumder said that approximately 1,000 houses were severely damaged in the Rangamati district affecting scores of people.

Many of the victims were from tribal communities in Rangamati that is close to the Indian border.

The Dhaka Met office said that on Tuesday morning they had recorded 343mm of rainfall in Rangamati over the period of 24 hours.

The latest deaths came weeks after Cyclone Mora hit Bangladesh’s southeast, damaging around tens of thousands of houses.

33 killed in Chittagong…!!

Many parts of Chittagong such as Rangunia, Raozan, Chandanaish and Banshkhali including the Bangladesh’s second largest city, were under waist-deep water.

Ahmed said that the disaster response teams had been set up to the affected areas to strengthen recovery work.

Police officer Rafiq Ullah said that on Monday night, 7 people, including 3 children, were killed in the hilly town of Bandarban after their homes were buried in mud.
