23-year-old CA Bhavani Devi of India has made India proud after she won the gold medal in a Tournoi Satellite fencing championship held in Reykjavik, Iceland on Saturday.
Indian fencer Devi has now become the first Indian to triumph a gold in in the sabre event of an international fencing event.
She had also won a silver medal in a satellite event previously.
India’s Bhavani Devi defeated Great Britain’s Sarah Jane Hampson of Great Britain 15-13 on points in the final round of the event.
The Chennai woman had also beaten another fencer Jessica Corby from Britain 15-11 in the semi-final.
While celebrating her victory, Bhavani Devi said:
“There were 26 participants from 8 countries in this event and the competition only got tougher from the quarterfinals stage.”
Tamil Nadu fencer CA Bhavani Devi further added:
“This is my third time in this competition. I have lost in quarterfinals in previous years. Now I have won my first medal. It is also the first medal in world level competition as I have won medals in Asian and Commonwealth championships”.
The competition was difficult after the quarterfinals held, Bhawani Devi said and added that in the semifinal and final round, the fencers from the British made her work very difficult for victory.
Chadalavada Anandha Sundhararaman Bhavani Devi is a sabre fencer is currently a fencing coach at Sagar Lagu’s training academy, the Sports Authority of India Centre in Thalassery, Kerala.
Crediting her success to her coach Nicola Zanetti, CA Bhavani said:
“He knows me for a long time even when I was not training with him. I trained with him for few months in the year 2016, and then from this March, I have been working with him. We both share a great understanding with each other and he knows how to drive or boost my game.”
Bhavani, the sabre fencer, who is presently doing her MBA from St Joseph’s engineering college, has a world rank of 57.

Bhawani Devi’s future agenda is the Moscow Grand Prix tournament to be held from June 2 to June 4. After that, Bhawani will be participating at the Asian Championship from June 15 to June 20.
