UP: FIR Filed Against 1200 BHU Students, Raj Babbar Among Others Detained


Uttar Pradesh Police have registered FIR against nearly 1200 students of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) after their protest turned violent after which cops did lathi-charge.

Few Hours after UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered an investigation into Saturday night’s violence inside the divine BHU campus.

On Sunday, dozen-plus students were detained after their protest as the police used force to expelled them. A video of a female student was beaten with batons by U.P. police added fuel to the queue.

Station Officer Lanka, CO Bhelupur, and one Additional City Magistrate have been removed following the violence at the BHU campus.

A squad of students had staged a sit-in at the main gate of the BHU university after a female student of the Arts Faculty was allegedly sexually abused by three men on a motorcycle inside the campus.

The students who were allegedly protesting were lathi-charged by the cops on Saturday night. A number of students, including females, and two journalists were hurt during the incident.

The brutality emerged after some students, protesting against the incident on Thursday, wanted to meet the vice-chancellor at his home.

Post-violence, the district administration declared weekends till October 2,17 in all universities and colleges in Varanasi. The Banaras Hindu University had earlier declared that the holidays would begin from September 28, 2017.

Yogi Adityanath sought a report from the divisional commissioner about the incident. Rahul Gandhi, Congress vice-president trolled the BJP over the lathi-charge on female students.

Attaching a link to a students video who was beaten up by male cops at the campus, Gandhi tweeted”:

“BJP VERSION OF BETI BACHAO, BETI PADHAO IN BHU”.

 

Last night, BHU issued a statement saying that the protest by the students just a day before PM Narendra Modi visit was “politically encouraged” to defame the image of the university.

The university also said that security guards were daily patrolling around campus and help from the police had been seeking to maintain peace.

Around 1,500 police personnel, including groups of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), have been set up to maintain law and order in the BHU campus.
