45th US President Donald Trump has broken a 20-year-old tradition by abandoning to host Ramadan dinner on the eve of Eid.
The White House event had been organized every year since President Hillary Clinton’s tenure. The Eid al-Fitr treat ends ‘Ramadan’, a time when Muslims fast and focus on the charitable giving.
According to the report, the US Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson denied a request to hold a reception.
In May, Mr. Tillerson had refused a commendation from the State Department’s office of global and religious affairs to organize a celebration.
After first iftar dinner in 1805, the White House began yearly Eid dinner tradition in the year 1996, under former First Lady Hillary Clinton.
It became a yearly tradition since 1999 and was attended by famous US Muslim leaders, legislators, and diplomats.
Mr. Donald Trump has previously been criticized for his use of the anti-Muslim power of speech, including on the campaign trail when he called for supervision of US mosques.
The tradition was started by Bill Clinton …!!
The president is the first leader not to host an Eid dinner for approximately two decades after the tradition was begun by ‘Bill Clinton’ and then continued by Barack Obama and George W. Bush.
He said in a statement:
“On behalf of the American people, Melania and I send our warm greetings to the Muslims as they celebrate Eid al-Fitr.”
He further added:
“During Eid al-Fitr holiday, we recall the importance of mercy, goodwill, and compassion. With Muslims all over the world, the United States revives our commitment to honor these values. Eid Mubarak.”
Mr. Rex Tillerson also released a brief statement, sending “best wishes to all Muslims celebrating the eve of Eid al-Fitr”.
The first presidential Iftar dinner a meal eaten after sunset when Muslims break their ‘fast’), is said to have been hosted by Thomas Jefferson in the year 1805 for a Tunisian ambassador.
